Stop Press (3.07.2001) from Hrhov - Samo Pacenovsky:

With a help of a young lady skilled in butterfly identification we started a small research project to find out how many dragonfly species still survive at the Great Hrhov fishpond. There were about 14 species reported before the (chemical) spraying, we found 4 of them, but it is certain that at least another 3-4 or more species are there at the moment. We need one more site visit at the beginning of September to get more comparable data. The dragonfly data will be not so accurate as the bird data and they will be not quantitative, of course. But, at least, we will have some basic information on insects
survival at the site.

More important is the fact, that we will manage to get a study on water - plankton in the Greater Hrhov fishpond, as well. I have persuaded a hydrobiologist from Kosice to do it for us. It is good news, I think, it could produce very important result. I am curious about the final outcome of this research.

Last week there were 5 White Egrets (Casmerodius albus). Non-breeders, of course.

In orchards of the village Hrhov was this year first time heard the Scops owl (Otus scops) and in a special rocky karst habitat in the steep southern slope over the village of Hrhov I did some bird counts this year. All 6 Slovakian species of titmice were found here as breeding species: the Great tit (Parus major), Blue tit (Parus caeruleus), Coal tit (Parus ater), Marsh tit (Parus palustris), Willow tit (Parus montanus), Crested tit (Parus cristatus), [in the same, rocky habitat with few trees and some bushes] and the Rock bunting (Emberiza cia) was found after the Blackbird (Turdus merula) and Blackcap (Sylvia atricapilla) the third most abundant bird.
