Sir, And so the slaughter begins once again. I heard that 15,000,000 birds etc, are killed annually. What a terrible, terrible stain on Cyprus's reputation. I live in the town of Peyia, and on November 11th, Armistice Day, I was rudely awakened at about 6.30am by what I thought was the start of the Third World War. No, this wasn't against humans, but against birds. The adversary of these minute creatures was generally a 5ft 6in homo sapiens. This murderous assault against a creature that does more good on this earth than most humans, went on ceaselessly till dark. November 14th I was hanging out my washing with bullets flying not far away. November 18th, not a sound. Heaven, I could sleep on. It was either too damn cold or there was nothing left to kill. Most likely the latter. What I cannot understand is that in a country so religion orientated the priests condone such slaughter. Surely they alone could stop this killing. Come on, all you yiayias and mommas, get together and stop this awful mayhem. On the first hunting Sunday, one man died and two lost an eye. This alone should make the government stop this maiming and killing not only of birds, but humans as well. I have lived here for 14 years and have complained 14 times, but the killing gets worse. Not only can I tell by the shots I hear, but by all the road signs being blasted as well. What a pretty sight. Dont say "Leave", we've invested all our money here and I'm too old. Liz Inkpin (Mrs), Peyia, Cyprus
