UNFORTUNATE INDEED Interior Minister Christodoulos Christodoulou this week bewailed the fact that some Cypriot citizens complained to the Council of Europe over the continuing mass slaughter of becaficos (ambelopoulia) and the consequent violation of the Berne Convention for the protection of migratory birds. Christodoulou said that "following serious accusations which were unfortunately submitted by Cypriot citizens to the special committee that follows implementation of the Berne Convention" Cyprus found itself in trouble with the 'committee'. Stressing his displeasure with the law abiding citizens who reported to the committee, Christodoulou added that "unfortunately, some compatriots of ours with excessive zeal strove to have Cyprus accused, and what is more, to a degree that does not correspond to reality." The simple reality in this case is that the government, and the ministers of Interior and Justice continue to tolerate the illegal poaching of ambelopoulia which, incidentally, makes the lawbreakers very rich. What is indeed unfortunate is that instead of commending the concerned citizens for trying to ensure compliance with the law, Christoulou had the temerity to imply they acted in an unpatriotic manner, denouncing the action as unfortunate. |
