Reply from Euro MP Diana Wallis to Keith Heywood, Proact Team UK

Dear Mr Heywood,

Re: Killing of migratorv birds on Cyprus

Thank you very much for your email enquiry concerning the trapping and slaughter of birds on Cyprus. These are indeed very disturbing reports, and I fully support your efforts to bring this issue to wider attention.

As a member of the European Parliament Environment Committee, my Liberal Democrat colleague Chris Davies has been following this very closely. He has raised the issue directly with the European Commission, and with the negotiators dealing with the Cypriot accession to the EU. Chris has also tabled several European Parliamentary Questions, the latest of which I include here. He should receive a response early next year, and we will forward this on to you if you so wish.

Both Chris and myself will continue to follow this issue, and to exert as much pressure as possible on the relevant authorities until it has been successfully resolved.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any further comments or concerns.

Yours sincerely,

Diana Wallis

Keith adds:

So far I have received just one response from a Euro MP, Diana Wallis, by letter post, to an e-mailed letter taken from your current campaign. This does seem quite positive, and I attach it for your records.

The question she refers to which Chris Davies tabled on the subject of Killing of migratory birds on Cyprus on December 4th was as follows:

< .... >

- When did the commission last raise with the Cypriot authorities the issue of the capture in nets and subsequent killing of migratory birds, and what was
the response? When will the comission next be raising the issue?

- Was the matter discussed at the Standing Committee of the Bern Convention on 26-30 November? If so, what representations were made by the Commission, and what was the outcome of the meeting?

< .... >

I will certainly be taking up Diana Wallis's offer to forward the reply to the above questions.

Proact comment:

This is a positive development which I hope will encourage others to write to their MEP - if they have not already done so.

Chris Davies, UK MEP, has concerned himself with the problem for some time and has close contacts with both the Cyprus Conservation (CCF) and the RSPB in UK. THe more MEPs we can inform and mobilise the better!
