Apreciat Conseller,

Com persones afectades i ornitòlegs de tot el món, estem consternats per les noticies que ens arriben dels conservacionistes de Catalunya sobre un pla que preveu la construcció dun aeroport a la Timoneda dAlfés.

En aquest nou segle, en el que s'hauria desperar una major consciència envers els problemes mediambientals, és trist haver de sentir que encara hi ha molts espais naturals amenaçats de destrucció pels interessos econòmics i polítics.

Considerant la importància que té aquest espai per la fauna ornitològica, els invertebrats i la vegetació - que són importants per mantenir la biodiversitat no tan sols a Europa sino també al vostre país -, esperem que no es duguin a terme plans que malmetin irreversiblement aquest espai natural. El juny de 1988, el Govern de la Generalitat, anunciant que laeròdrom era provisional, va incloure la Timoneda dAlfés a la llista despais dinterés natural (PEIN) degut a lalt valor ecològic daquest espai i a la presència en ell dels ocells que hi nidifiquen. Els motius pels quals es va protegir aquest espai es mantenen, donat que les poblacions daquestes espècies docells estan més amenaçades que mai.

Nosaltres esperem que vosté faci ús de la responsabilitat del seu càrrec per garantir que els plans de construcció dun aeroport a la Timoneda dAlfés siguin reconsiderats. Esperant que ens pugui tranquil·litzar amb la notícia que la flora i fauna de la Timoneda d'Alfés restaran intactes i lliures de pertorbacions que puguin malmetre les seves poblacions, a benefici dels catalans i dels visitants del seu país,

CONSERVE THE BIODIVERSITY OF TIMONEDA D'ALFES

Dear Minister,

As concerned individuals and bird-lovers worldwide we are dismayed to hear from Catalonian conservationists and citizens that plans are being considered to develop an airport in the Timoneda d'Alves steppe area.

It is sad to hear, in this hopefully more environmentally conscious new century, that yet more irreplaceable natural habitats are being threatened with destruction for short term economic and political aims.

Bearing in mind the importance of this area to endangered bird, insect and vegetation species, which are important to the diversity of our common European natural wealth and not just to your region, it is hoped that no irreversible and damaging development action will be carried out. In June 1998 your government, stating that the use of the aerodrome was provisional, included the Timoneda d'Alves in the list of Catalan natural interesting sites (PEIN) because its "high ecological value" due to the presence breeding birds. This factor has not changed - indeed the stability of these rare bird species has become more critical.

We hope that you will use the responsibility of your office to ensure that the airport development proposals will be reconsidered. In the hope that you can reassure us that the important flora and fauna habitats in the Timoneda d'Alfes will be left intact and undisturbed for the long term benefit of Catalans and visitors to your country alike, we remain,
