PROTEST EMAIL CAMPAIGN AGAINST LAPWING TRAPPING IN FRANCE

lapwing_camp.jpg
Lapwings are trapped as delicacies in France

Send your personal protest message against this barbaric and unnecessary killing of a declining European species to the French President Nicolas Sarkozy

The background

Hundreds of thousands of Lapwings, Golden Plovers and other rare waders are still trapped or shot in France as gastronomic delicacies.

In Val du Aisne (Champagne) in Northern France bird trappers lay out special ponds with huge clap nets to catch the now endangered wader species. The French Environment Ministry in Paris legally condones this outrageous state of affairs!

Status of lapwing protection in the EU
The EU/EC management plan for the Lapwing is at http://ec.europa.eu/environment/nature/conservation/wildbirds/hunting/managt_plans_en.htm

Currently, there are open seasons for Lapwing in France, Spain, Italy, Malta and Greece. The available data suggest an annual harvest in the order of one million birds within the EU. In addition the eggs are harvested in one province of the Netherlands. France, Italy and Spain are responsible for more than 90% of the total lapwing kills in Europe.

The Lapwing is not the only species which has rapidly declined but is still hunted in the EU. Other examples are Skylark, Snipe, Turtle-Dove, Curlew or Golden Plover.

EUROPE CANNOT AFFORD TO FURTHER DECIMATE DWINDLING PROTECTED BIRD SPECIES

Dear Commissioner Dimas,

You will be aware that French, Italian and Spanish hunters have permission from their governments, a stance tolerated by the European Commission, to annually shoot or trap hundreds of thousands of endangered waders species - including Lapwing and Golden Plover - belonging to species the populations of which are seriously declining in many European countries.

A vivid depiction of this barbaric, unnecessary and environmentally damaging practice can be seen online in a video clip provided by the Committee Against Bird Slaughter (CABS) at http://www.komitee.de/index.php?youtube_france.

We wish to protest in the strongest of terms against this annual slaughter of birds which are fast disappearing from their traditional habitats year after year. It is beyond our understanding that the European Commission can tolerate, and the government of a long-standing member state permit, the killing of an endangered species on such a scale.

We demand that you thoroughly investigate the scale, method and requirement for the continuance of such an out-dated ‘traditional’ practice, with a view to its abolition as soon as possible.

In anticipation of swift action on the part of your directorate, and feedback on the progress of your progress I/we remain.

Yours sincerely,

STOPPT DEN KIEBITZFANG IN FRANKREICH

An:

Commissioner Stavros Dimas

Sehr geehrter Herr Umweltkommissar Dimas,
