WHY DON'T THE EU REACT TO THE SLAUGHTER OF PROTECTED SPECIES?

At the time of the 2001 killing of a complete pack of 9 wolves, a plea for the Council of Europe by a Proact ally brought the following reaction:

Objet: RE: LOUP EN NORVEGE

Monsieur,

Le Comité permanent de la Convention de Berne a examiné la gestion du loup en Norvège en 2001.

Le Comité n'a pas estime nécessaire d'ouvrir des procédures d'infraction contre la Norvège pour non respect de la Convention de Berne ....... (The committee does not consider it necessaryto start non-compliance procedures against Norway for not respecing the Berne Convention)

Subject:

ANOTHER WAVE OF WOLF KILLINGS IN NORWAY - WHEN WILL THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION ACT

By electronic mail to:

Commissioner Margot Wallstrom

Commissioner Stavros Dimas

Dear Commissioners,

The news of the planned slaughter (after the killing of a pack of 9 wolves in 2001) of 6 European Wolf Canis lupus lupus individuals, once again demonstrates Norway's contempt for the environmental concerns of their fellow Europeans and others worldwide, including their immediate neighbour which has protested without avail at the Norwegian wolf cull. Two alpha females have already been shot by jubilant hunters. The others will certainly share the same fate.

The European Commission has shown itself prepared to put pressure on countries, who are also not EU members, which threaten the natural balance in Europe through destruction of habitats, species or other resources. When will they take a similar - and public - line with Norway?

As conservationists or concerned lovers of nature in Europe and elsewhere we consider that you owe us an answer to this question.

Yours very sincerely
