PROACT CYPRUS CAMPAIGN
CONGRATULATIONS TO THE GAME SERVICE
Home | CONGRATULATIONS GAME SERVICE | MINISTER FOR THE INTERIOR - NEW | The Cyprus Government | Mayor of Paralimni | Famagusta MPs | Media - Cyprus | Mailing Methods | Responses from Cyprus

The Game Fund Service, the organisation which is the main weapon against illegal trapping and hunting, do a very good job but have limited resources. They are answerable to the Minister for the Interior, Mr Andreas Panayiotou who appears to be giving them more freedom of action than his predecessor. The Heaad of the Game Fund Service is Mr Pantelis Hadjiyerou.

Recently they have stepped up their campaign against illegal hunting and trapping of songbirds - Ambelopoulia - by raiding restaurants where the birds are sold and consumed. For a report on this see proactupdates . A record of other operations is conained in a previous reply to Proact at Responses from Cyprus .

Many Proact supporters called for an opportunity to "...send heartfelt congratulations and support.." for the Game Fund Service's actions. Here is an opportunity for you to do so - either using the text provided or composing a mail in your own words.

A draft mail of encouragement to the Minister of the Interior is also available at Minister for the Interior - NEW

KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK

To:

Mr Pantelis Hadjiyerou,

Head of the Game Fund Service,

Dear Mr Hadjiyerou,

As bird and nature lovers, who take particular interest in environmental protection and conservation developments in Cyprus, we would like to congratulate you and your colleagues on your continuing efforts to prevent illegal hunting and trapping. Your most recent actions have received wide exposure; not only in Cyprus but throughout Europe and beyond. We are aware that this is just the most public confirmation of the scope of your operations; your successes in the past, including joint activities with the British Sovereign Base Authorities, have also been taken note of and are appreciated in many quarters.

The latest series of raids against restaurants, where the illegal sale and consumption of 'ambelopoulia' take place, is a bold but necessary escalation in this important campaign. This initiative is most welcome and an appropriate signal of your acknowledgement of the importance of the European Union's Bird Directives in advance your country's accession in 2004.

We wish you and your organisation every success in your continuing campaign,

Yours sincerely,
