The Mayor of Paralimni is a notorious supporter of (illegal!) trapping and hunting. The Municipality borders on the British
Sovereign Base - East; close to Cape Pyla where a great deal of trapping takes place. Intervention by local conservationists
have led recently to prosecutions for illegal well-drilling. The sole purpose was the watering of tree plantations where hundreds
of metres of mist nets could be erected. Human ingenuity at its worst! Let's make our views known to Mr Nikos Vlittis!

TRAPPING AND SHOOTING OF MIGRANT BIRDS IS ILLEGAL MR VLITTIS
To: Mr Nicos Vlittis Mayor of Paralimni Dear Mr Vlittis, Your open support
for the illegal and barbaric trapping and killing of migrant birds is now known well beyond the shores of Cyprus. It
defies belief that a democratically elected official should openly defy the law; moreso when his or her actions affect the
natural resources and the citizens of other countries. The ambellopoulia, which appear on the menus of Cyprus restaurants
(also a criminal offence) were part of the dwindling pan-European natural heritage. It is sad that the migrant birds which
stop over on your island, on their way to and from their breeding grounds, should prove fatal for so many individuals; and
critical for the survival of the species. As Mayor of Paralimni you will be very aware of the island's, and your
region's, economic dependence on tourism. Rest assured Mr Klittis - so long as the Cypriot authorities at all levels continue
this dereliction of their duty in not stamping out this barbaric and unnecessary trade, we will do all in our power to publicise
this ugly blot on Cyprus' reputation. We hope, particularly in view of the imminent accession of Cyprus to the
European Union and in the hope of a successful conclusion to the current reunification talks, that you can be persuaded to
take a more responsible and democratic attitude. [We ask you to take this letter seriously. Not all Europeans
are capable of expressing themselves perfectly in English but the content and sentiments of this letter reflect our views
